FAQ
The minimum size for a QR code depends on two main factors: scanning distance and code complexity (how much data is encoded). More data means more modules, which requires a larger size for reliable scanning.
A reliable rule of thumb: Scanning distance ÷ 10 = Minimum QR code size
Example: For scanning from 3 feet (36 inches) away, your QR code should be at least 3.6 inches.
For close-range scanning
Works for most printed materials
Easy to scan from any angle
Use this formula to calculate the minimum QR code size based on expected scanning distance:
(measurements in the same units)
Here are specific size recommendations for common printed applications:
| Application | Recommended Size | Scan Distance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Business Cards | 0.8" × 0.8" (2cm) | 4-8 inches | Minimum practical size |
Flyers & Brochures | 1" × 1" (2.5cm) | 6-12 inches | Good for handheld materials |
Posters | 2" × 2" (5cm) | 1-2 feet | Wall-mounted, close viewing |
Banners | 4" × 4" (10cm) | 3-6 feet | Standing distance |
Billboards | 12"+ × 12"+ (30cm+) | 10+ feet | Driving or walking distance |
Product Labels | 0.6" × 0.6" (1.5cm) | 2-4 inches | Close scanning required |
For screens, size is measured in pixels. Here are recommendations for common digital uses:
| Platform | Recommended Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Website (desktop) | 150-200px | Standard monitor viewing distance |
Website (mobile) | 120-150px | Phone screen, close viewing |
Email signatures | 100-120px | Small but functional |
Digital signage | 300px+ | Depends on screen size and distance |
Social media | 200-300px | Account for compression |
The most common mistake. When in doubt, go bigger.
Complex codes with lots of data need to be larger than simple URL codes.
The white border is required for scanning. Don't crop it out.
Compression artifacts make scanning harder. Use SVG or PDF for print.
Always test your QR code at actual size before bulk printing.
Our generator creates high-resolution QR codes you can scale to any size.
Create Free QR CodeThe absolute minimum is about 0.4" (1cm), but we recommend at least 0.8" (2cm) for reliable scanning. Size depends on how much data is encoded and scanning distance.
Yes! More data creates a denser QR code with more modules. Dense codes need to be larger to remain scannable. A simple URL needs less space than a full vCard.
Use the 10:1 ratio rule: scanning distance divided by 10 equals minimum QR code size. For a 3-foot scanning distance, the QR code should be at least 3.6 inches.
QR codes can be any size as long as they maintain proper proportions. Very large codes are fine. The main concern is minimum size, not maximum.
